Before the Cooper, there was the Mini and not unlike today, the auto industry in England was facing the dilemma of increased fuel prices. Mini engineers solved the situation by building a car that was not only fuel efficient but affordable for most people. The launch of the Mini in 1959 made an impression on automobile design and still does to this day. The transverse engine distributed weight more evenly on and increased stability while the wheels that were moved to the very corners of the frame made for more passenger room.
The Mini was upgraded by John Cooper of the Cooper Car Company which is how we got the name still used today. Cooper was a racing legend if British car rallies.
